I think the CX-5 Hybrid is only available in the UK and I am asking on behalf of my dad. but in case anyone here has it, i have some questions.

does the extra battery under the floor power anything besides the start stop function? and does it help lessen the strain on the main battery for USB ports or other accessories? Appreciate any answers thanks!

You are a good son for trying to get this sorted out for your dad.
It's my understanding that the UK version is what they call a mild hybrid, which can be a bit confusing. Iirc it's not quite like the full hybrids we see more often here. That smaller battery is the little engine that could, it helps the gas engine and powers all the regular electronics like the radio and USB ports when the car is stopped. It's designed that way on purpose, so it takes the load off the main engine and saves a bit of fuel.
Is your dad having a specific problem with it, or is he just trying to get a handle on how the new tech works?

The UK CX-5 Hybrid has a mild hybrid system, and the extra battery mainly supports the start stop function and assists the engine slightly during acceleration. It doesnt directly power accessories like USB ports, and it doesn't reduce much strain on the main 12v battery when it comes to running standard electronics

The extra battery mainly supports the start/stop system to keep the engine off longer and smoother, It doesn't really power the USB ports or other accessories directly, so it won't reduce strain on the main battery for those, it's more about helping with efficiency and reducing wear on the main battery rather than powering extras
